When we start reel mowing program for a customers it is advised that they seek the care of a proper fertilization and pest control company if they have not already did so for their central Florida Lawn.
The reason we suggest that they find a high quality service to provide this service is because with reel mowing what we are looking to accomplish is turf density. The science behind how we achieve dense turf with reel mowing in Central Florida is simple , it relates to Apical Dominance.
The potential for dense thick healthy turf outweigh the potential for issues, especially when properly managed turf is being reel cut and properly feed and cared for.
We would prefer to see your Zoysia or Bermuda lawn cared for on a monthly basis when it is being reel cut vs. the regular every other month program traditionally used on St. Augustine lawns. The reason for this is reel mowing while achieving turf density also limits root depth because of the shorter blade. Because of this lower root depth the plant has less area to seek nutrition, lower reserves. That is why we feel monthly programs which rely heavily on fast uptake methods such liquid feeding as well as combing those methods with high quality granular fertilizers.
